Hoping someone here maybe able to answer this. I took a pic of this flying aphid yesterday walking across my car roof. I'ts about 4mm long. Much to my suprise the sugar drop exhaust pipes appear to originate at the top of the abdomen (near the thorax) rather than just straight out of the abdomen about 2/3rds down from the thorax. Does anyone know if this is just an illusion? Any specific ID appreciated to. Thanks BrianV. Edited by LordV on 02-10-2005 11:26 |

Hello, I'm not a specialist, but the cornicles are not the organ to excret honeydew. Aphids use the rectum for that. The cornicles are used to excret alarm pheromones and other defense means. See for instance: http://pubs.nrc-c...f_cjz12-02 Pierre Duhem |

Thanks for the correction- shows how much I know about them I'll have to try attacking the next one first before taking a pic Brian V. Edited by LordV on 03-10-2005 08:13 |

The siphuncili are placed just beyond the middle of the abdomen. That is found in at least some species of Aphididae - Mascrosiphini.
