Hello, Disclaimer that this is not only my first post but also my first ever attempt at identifying anything at all, so I am entirely expecting to be wrong :) This one I photographed on a beach in Tallinn, Estonia, early March. Estimate of size around 8-10mm. Family seems to be Lonchopteridae, and my guess at species is Lonchoptera bifurcata or Lonchoptera lutea - can anyone confirm or correct? (Is it even possible to ID species based on this photo?) tixuana attached the following image: [265.83Kb] Edited by tixuana on 14-03-2017 20:51 |

This is not Lonchoptera but one of the beach-dwelling Schizophora. Coelopa? (Other similar large beach flies are Fucellia and Orygma. You will also find tiny Sphaeroceridae and predatory Empidoidea.) |

Another typical fly from coast of Baltic Sea in March belongs to Heterocheilidae. I think this is Heterocheila buccata. Regards Piet |
