Hi everyone, my first post here! This mosquito pic was taken on 2nd August, Lincoln UK. It looks to me like the male Culex pipiens with the exception of having a fatter abdomen with a dark patch. The back has striping. Thanks for any help! |

I don't see the pic which I uploaded. Do I have to request permission for this? |

I have another pic from 5 days earlier, it looks to be the same animal but has a smaller dark patch under the abdomen. Don't know what I'm doing wrong but I'm having trouble posting the pic! It's only 23.3kb, 375x300. blowave attached the following image: [23.39Kb] Edited by blowave on 05-08-2007 14:54 |

Difficult to be 100% sure, but I think Culex pipiens is the most likely species. The dark patch is her blood meal, and the paler splodge is a fat body, or a batch of eggs - hence the fat abdomen.

Thanks Tony, so I guess the female in the first pic has sucked a lot more blood! It's possibly the same one as the second pic, as it was 5 days earlier, but I really don't know how many of these I could expect to have around! Do you think this is sufficient to post the pics in the Gallery as there are none there? Perhaps with a note of nearly 100% certainty? Janet |

Janet If these were in your garden, there are likely to be lots - in my experience they are the commonest mosquito that breeds in garden situations in Britain. I think it is worth posting the first as Culex sp., though it's difficult to be absolutely certain of its identity - but it does show the typical resting pose of a culicine. Yes they were in my garden, I have a small fly wildlife reserve going here! Just need the larger megapix camera, my 5mp is doing a good job but not good enough. I will post the first pic as a sp. as you say, need to get permission first I think. Thanks, Janet |
