Yesterday I found this Scaeva (June 12th 2016, France, Indre, Saint Gilles). It was a big fly (ca. 15 mm).

In another forum it was suggested that this might be Scaeva dignota (male). The yellow spots do reach the border, but I have understood that that is not always decisive. In one post I read that you could see the difference in the angle of the eyes, but I can't find what difference that is. Can someone give me a clue?

Thank you very much Lukasz. I have read your article and have seen the pictures of the heads. That makes it very clear my specimen is Scaeva selenitica.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
