Good evening,
this Gyposoma came to light at the coast of Öland, southern Sweden 11 August this year. I reckon it is not possible to determine these through pictures?

Thanks,

That is a special one: G. dolycorides.

This three year old determination has now been doubted by a Swedish expert, Christer Bergström. he says that dolycorides is very rare in Sweden, and furthermore, he thinks it look more like male G.clavatum instead. The scutellar stripe continues further to the thorax on typical dolycoridis according to him.

Christer knows his stuff alright and of course he is the expert for Sweden.
If I look at the oicture now, it could be either clavatum or doly.
Clavatum should have sublateral spots and the hind margin of the scutum and thrse don’t show. Probably why I called it doly at the time. However, these spots can be vey difficult to see, depending on the light. So, I most certainly would not exclude clavatum at this time.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
