Temnostoma it is, but not apiforme. With the key http://home.hccne...n_key.html I arrive at T. sibiricum, or, may be, T. vespiforme subsp. tuwensis or subsp. altaicum. Here, a dorsal view on the abdominal stripes would help to estimate their width.

Well, I'd vote for T. sibiricum that is described as follows: "Tergite 3-4: middle, dark stripe more than twice as wide as the anterior yellow stripe; tergite 3: posterior yellow stripe narrow: its width 1/3-1/2 times the width of the anterior yellow stripe. -> Temnostoma sibiricum Portschinsky". However, the confirmation by a Syrphid expert is appreciated!
BTW, a great fly!

I agree. I am guarded a little by an area of its distribution. I didn't find confirmation that it is found in the European part of Russia.

I just followed the key; the range of distribution of T. sibiricum is unknown to me. So help from a Russian syrphidologist would be fine!
