I found this fly in my garden on 1 October 2015. My attempts to identify it have led to a tentative identification of Eumea mitis, though I may have been influence by finding one of those in 2014. I would appreciate an expert opinion.

Best wishes,
Martin

First impression is that it is good and mitis is a late autumn species.

However, the wing venation seems to be a little off: the apical crossvein should hit the wing margin in proximity of the wing tip. It seems to be more anterior. Is this perhaps artificial ?

Thanks

Theo

Thanks Theo. I'll send the specimen to Chris Raper for him to give it a closer look.

I hope Chris won't mind me relaying his comments after examining the specimen. He said, "It's not as clear as some specimens I have seen (the face looks flat to me, not weakly concave) but the other features seem to match, like the face & antenna length - plus the hairs ... so I think it qualifies as mitis".

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
