 I saw this insect in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, on Tuesday 23rd June. It was nectaring in a meadow of mixed grasses and wild flowers. Any suggestions for an ID?

 Large species with somewhat yellowish base to the wings and dark legs with reddish tibiae: Empis tessellata.
