It was a medium sized fly observed on parsnip yesterday afternoon.

Compsilura concinnata

Very often reared, not too common in the field (but more in warmer countries)

I must say, this species always gets me. I see quite a lot of specimens and it's very easy to key-out but in the field it looks very anonymous. What do you (Theo) see in the photos that makes it identifiable? Smile

The elongated abdomen and the rounded bend in vein M strongly suggest Blondeliini.
And then, with these pictures it's simple: 4 post DC are very unusual in Blondeliini. nearly confined to Compsilura. Once on this trail, one notes that the ocellar bristles are lacking. This sets the ID. The hairy eyes and bristles on facial ridge confirm it.

Many thanks for the comprehensive explanation and of course for the ID.
