Shiny ocellar tubercle possibly a better diagnostic character for Hybomitra. Some Tabanus have hairy eyes and/or 3 eye bands. Nice photos, someone should be able to make a positive ID. |

Three bands and hairy eyes = Hybomitra is a rule of thumb, I give to explain that there is more than Tabanus. Tony is right, Tabanus quatuornotatus is a notorious exception and in the Mediterrean REgion there are some more. NEvertheless, if you have 3 bands and hairy eyes, 99 % chance it's Hybomitra. This one has a narrow frontal stripe and black notopleural lobes, therefore female Hybomitra bimaculata Theo |

Black: As my teacher said: You can only learn by acknowledging your ignorance. So don't apologize for it ! And I agree Tony: Things might be different in the new world. Theo |
