Can anyone suggest a subfamily for this fly? Apologies for not putting a scale on the picture, but I've lost it. Was about 2mm I think. Malaise trap, Townsville, Queensland. Graeme Cocks attached the following image: [30.74Kb] |

Lestremiinae, possibly the cosmopolitan Anaretella defecta. The wing ventation and eye bridge match that species. No other species is recorded from Australia. Several other Lestremiinae have been introduced to Hawaii or New Zealand and could be found elsewhere around the Pacific. They are fungus gnats and can be transported with wood or soil. |
