The only shot I have. It was resting in this position. The flash scared it and it flew away.

Tachinidae, Phasiinae. Probably Trichopoda. There is another genus in the tropics with smaller scales on the hind tibia.

wow. I expected more bristles and hairs.. thanks for the ID. I also found that this genus could be found right here in my back yard in North Carolina. I will keep an eye open ...

You could have the same species in your yard. The common species is Trichopoda pennipes which is found in North America, South America, and Europe. This might be pennipes. I don't know how to distinguish species. Phasiinae tend to be bare. |

Yes, Rodrigo Dios should be putting the finishing touches to his revision very soon There are many genera that look similar though and the Trichopodini are very diverse i nthe neotropics
