I think it's a Ceratopogonidae, about 5mm, can it be named?
Found yesterday in Zeist, Holland

Are you sure about size? It looks like Stilobezzia which is much smaller.

This is consistent with Stilobezzia antennalis, a holarctic species originally described from North America. I do not know what the other European species look like. If you can find a description of flavirostris, compare that. The several species of subgenus Acanthohelea are less likely.

I found a useful reference. The female Stilobezzia flavirostris is for practical purposes a larger antennalis. (Male genitalia are distinct.) I could not tell the difference from this photo.

Assuming your size is an overestimate, call this

Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) cf. flavirostris.

Hello John,

Thank you for all your efforts to name my fly!
It sure looks like Stilobezzia, it seemed to me it was rather big,
maybe 4 mm then, I'm not sure.
I have another picture, more or less the same, can it help..?

Regards,
Hedy

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
