I came across this on the edge of some old, wet woodland near a river today - southern England. Reminded me of a picture I once saw of Tipula maxima - is that close?

Yes, it is the only one with that wing pattern, in Britain at least. Not to be confused with Pedicia rivosa. |

Chris, Tipula maxima is fairly frequent in woodlands, but never particularly common. PS - saw my second Tachina ursina of the year today. Firts time I've seen two in one year!
