This morning on my wall some black Bibionidae. One was slightly different. A picture from the side reveiled a large snout, which brings me into the Empididae. However it is entirely black and has extremely hairy legs, especially the femur. I haven't been able to identify it yet, so help appreciated.

Photographed resting on a wall today in the eastern part of the Netherlands in my garden. Adjacent to a mixed woodland on poor sandy soil.

Only one likely candidate: Empis ciliata. A female in this case.

Paul, just one more question. Is it rare in Holland?

According to http://users.skyn...liegen.htm it is in Belgium.

It is rather uncommon, mainly found in the area of the main rivers (Rijn, Waal, Maas).

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
