Family Drosophilidae. Perhaps a specialist could even tell you the genus.

Is the valid name of this species Phortica variegata (Fall?n, 1823) as in The Drosophilidae (Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark (Baechli et al. 2004) and Fauna Europaea?

Must be, if it is in that book under that name. I used an older key to confirm my suspicion. Wink I never was happy with them being in the same genus anyway. Pfft

Since I was searching for more information on the genus Phortica I contacted Dr. Jan Maca and also asked him to look at the pictures of the Phortica specimens on www.diptera.info. His comment on this specimen was:

Probably P. variegata.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
