Hi

Today I caught this smallish Dolichopus sp. It was swept from coastal vegetation on the small island Amager close to Copenhagen.
Using Grichanov's key I end up with Dolichopus latilimbatus, but it isn't a perfect match. According to the key the species should have a finely haired face, but this specimen doesn't. If it has it is so fine I can't see it! However, it has two dorsal setae on basitarsus 3 and frons metallic green and antennae entirely black with a bit of reddish infuscation beneath.
Is D. latilimbatus okay, or have I missed something?

It is not latilimbatus. Why not albifrons?

The reason I didn't consider albifrons was that frons in this specimen isn't exactly white pollinose. It is sub-shining green with white pollinosity. The antennae aren't all black either.
What do you think? Still albifrons after all...

Yes, indeed! Why not... Scape and pedicel are brownish yellow beneath and the wing tips are darkened apically.
I'll record it as Dolichopus sabinus.

Thanks, guys.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
