This beautiful fly was found yesterday in high Pyrenees, in the limit bewteen France and Spain, in alpine pastures. The size is as an Eristalis arbustorum. Please help with ID! Thanks! Isidro attached the following image: [64.43Kb] |

It looks a kind of rufus but whetehr it is that species, too?

I would say habitus and habitat is Merodon unicolor Strobl in Czerny & Strobl, 1909. Frequent in Pyrenees. Please compare the key in the download section too. Regards Piet |

Thanks a lot everybody. I compared Merodon rufus and M. unicolor and clearly the male of the latter species is very similar to mine while rufus is not identical. I will put this name unless somebody tell me the contrary, |
