The Netherlands, Tilburg, 4-10.VI.2012.
Can anyone narrow it down a bit? Perhaps Iain?

Hi Jan Willem

I hope you are well. The specimen is fortunately one of the easier Lonchaeids to identify! - with short antennal flagellomere and long dorsal setulae half way along the apical segment of the aculeus it is Protearomyia nigra
best wishes ......... Iain

Hi Iain,

I'm fine thanks. Hope you are well also!
Thanks a lot for the identification of the specimen. Species level is better than I expected Smile.

Iain, with the longer dorsal apical setulae, is greciana not more likely? The British key does not show these dorsal apical setulae. I had a similar specimen from one of our museum windows today and greciana is where I ended up initially.

Hi Paul

well spotted - I think there is actually an error in the key illustration as P. nigra does have a pair of long dorsal setae on the apical segmnet of the aculeus. One further complication is that I have found there to be a futher 3 undescribed species of Palearctic Protearomyia, one of which appears relatively common in western Europe - so at present although I can distinguish the males I am rather cautious about naming females!

best wishes ......... Iain

I would not mind receiving some info on these other species and what might tell me the difference between females of greciana and nigra.
I collected two males this last weekend in Germany and it could mean additional material to study for you. Smile
