Hi all, The photo was taken on June 10, 2012 in Russia, Pskovskaya oblast, at a raised bog. Is it possible to ID genus, species of this one? I read in a key that this might be Culiseta bcs it has hair near spiraculum, but I'm not sure that I identify the hair correctly. And, then, as there are few Culiseta with no stripes on legs, it's bergrothi or glaphyroptera? I also looked if it could be the most widely spread Culex pipiens, but according to the key it's 1st joint of the tarsus should not be shorter than the tibia. But many web-sites publish photos of “Culex pipiens” with 1st joint of the tarsus shorter than the tibia (only on Diptera.info this attribute is observed) and thus I can't understand if the other web-sites have wrongly ID-d photos or if the attribute is not so obligatory and thus this one can be Culex pipiens, too… Or maybe with the photo it's all just wild guessing? Thank you. |

This is neither Culiseta nor Culex, both of which have a blunt-ended abdomen. This is Aedes sensu lato. I can't say which species, and I'm not sure whether it's Ochlerotatus or one of the other genera/subgenera in this group. It might be Ochlerotatus punctor, but I'm not sure what other species you have which could be confused with that. Don't rely on identifications of flies on non-specialist websites. Frequently the family is wrong, never mind the genus or species. Edited by Tony Irwin on 16-12-2012 21:43 Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |
