I found this Physocephala near the small village Kéleshalom, about 17 km. W-SW of Kiskunhalas, Hungary (coordinates: 46°22'20.91" N. 19°19'57.20" E.), among ancient sand dunes covered by sparse vegetation. Date: 17. 07. 2011. Using either van Veen’s key or the key of Chvála for Czechoslovakian Conopinae (1961), one quickly gets to the couplet separating P. pusilla and lacera, which is based on the size of each sp. This does not work very well for photographs. Although I estimated the size of this fly around 10 mm, I don’t trust myself in this respect… However, Chvála gives a brief description of each of this sp., and he mentions there that the abdomen of P. pusilla is essentially black, while that of P. lacera is brownish red. So I concluded that mine is a Physocephala lacera male. Since this sp. seems to be quite rare in Hungary, I would greatly appreciate if someone could confirm (or correct) this ID. It is not cleared yet if pusilla and lacera are distinct species (as far as I know). But it looks to be this/these species... Try to attract the attention of Jens-Hermann Stuke for this query  |

This species belongs to the pusilla group and in fact I assume that is is a very variable species complex. The name lacer will not be wrong anyhow. Jens-Hermann |
