Hi, I found this Miltogrammine fly on 19.05.2012, near Mórahalom, about 20 km. W. of Szeged, S. Hungary. The reason I think it is P. penicillaris is that I found a description of several Pterella sp. here: http://archive.org/details/spixiana2426199799zool and I believe I can see a small bunch of long setae originating from the penultimate tarsal joint of the fist leg, a character that seems specific to P. penicillaris (where the name derives from, I presume). Can someone confirm or correct this ID? Best regards, Henrik piros attached the following image: [146.67Kb] Edited by piros on 21-11-2012 18:55 |

I'd like to give this one another chance. This is the only picture I have, but I can make tolerable enlargements of any details that might help identification. |

Pterella have a pair of vibrissae. I think it's a Miltogramma.

Thank you very much, Stephane! And indeed, Miltogramma oestracea males have such a long, arched ad seta on the 4th tarsal segment of the foreleg! Best regards, Henrik |

That was also my thought, I'm not specialist though.

Thank you, Stephane! (Sorry for late reply!) May I name this fly Miltogramma oestracea, or there should be some reservations? Regards, Henrik Edited by piros on 11-12-2012 14:06 |
