I think these two photos depict the same Diptera, although I'm not 100% certain. I spotted it often on various types of fungus last year in a holm oak and pine wood near Rome in Italy. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, Sarah

These are pictures of a Helomyzidae, genus Suillia. One of the species in the genus with wings marked like this is S. variagata, but I do not know if there are any other species like it in Italy.

Thanks again Paul. We certainly have Suillia variagata in my part of Italy, along with quite a few others of the same genus. Suillia sp. is certainly near enough for me at the moment! Sarah

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
