Hi all
This photo was taken two days ago in Hong Kong, in a butterfly garden inside a country park.
Someone suggested it should be a Trupanea sp., but he also mentioned that there is no known species from this genus in Hong Kong or even the nearby Guangdong province.
Any idea about its identity?

Hi,

It sure looks lika a Trupanea, however I have no idea of the species. I will have a look at my literature to see if I can come up with somthing on Trupanea in Japan.

Cheers,

John

There are four species in Japan. T. amoena seems to be the most likely candidate of all these to be observed in HK. T. collina seems to be a Southern species, it is found only in the subtropical islands of Japan. This could be another candidate.

Thanks for all your ideas.
The mate in another forum suggested that it may be T. tianmushana (Wang, 1996).
Cannot get to the literature yet or otherwise can dig out the diagnostic features...Sad

Hi,

Pushing it trough the book of Wang (1996) The fruitflies of the East Asian Region I come to T. tianmushana.
- three pairs of frontal setae. (impossible to see in this picture, but the only species having four frontal setae has an entirely different wingpattern).
- An isolated hyaline spot present at the apex of the wing
- preapical brown band in cell dm extending to posterior margin of wing. (This is the band between the two crossveins)
- Wing with an oblique brown band from the pterostigma to crossvein r-m: T. tianmushana.

Cheers,

John

Thanks John Smile
I have posted two more photos in the original forum, more clearly showing the wing patterns. You may take a look there:
