Anyone can help to identify this species ? Photo taken on 14 April 2012, Southern Bohemia, Czech republic; on the edge of a disused sand pit. Length 12 mm.

Thank you S.

Thank you Ktyr; no I did not catch any, in fact they were quite clumsy and unlike other Asilidae, easy to photograph and that was enough for me.

Any idea as to the species ? I was checking the checklist for the Czech republic, in fact there is only one species quoted, it is Lasiopogon cinctus.

Regards

David

I'm just starting to learn species of Lasiopogon, so I won't venture a guess. You could try sending the photo to Rob Cannings at the Royal BC Museum, he studied the genus for his dissertation. There are several undescribed (or at least unpublished) species in Europe, and given how poorly sampled some areas are, I wouldn't put too much stock in the checklist. Neighboring countries show up with several other species; are those truly not present in your country, or have they just not been caught yet by someone who would know the difference?
Happy hunting!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
