I had originally thought that these would be the same species - applying the comfortable rule from higher up the food-chain that congeners don't co-exist - but presently it occured to me that most flies are limited in population by predation, not competition, and so the female (I'm assuming) seems liable to spend the rest of her days in my unidentified folder (the image, at any rate. Still clinging to the hope that she is the same as the male, I'm posting his - marginally more inclusive - portrait in the same thread. Both in managed (beech?) forest, north side of the hill, South Downs Way (Sussex). Both 08 August 2011. Will van Niekerk attached the following image: [163.16Kb] |
