What a mess? What are they doing threesome? I suppose they are Empididae, but what genus and species they belong to? I captured them in winter rye crop last year in Central European Russia during my expedition research. I'll be very grateful if somebody help me to id them.

Well I can not help you a lot, but let us clarify the situation. The top one is the male who brought a present to the female in the middle to mate. The lowest fly is the present. It is not an Empidid, I leave the identification to others...

The empid will be a species of Empis but I doubt that the picture will allow much further identification. I think the prey is a calyptrate fly, maybe a muscid.
