HI

* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 18.11.2006
* size - 4 mm (small fly)
* habitat - open land
* substrate - leaf of Castanea sativa

hundreds of these flies around. Grape fruits in decomposition. Lots of Drosophilidae, Sarcophagidae, Calliphoridae flies! And some Syrphidae, and Polistes sp. too...

Sepsis sp. ? no spot in wings. Can be Ulidiidae fly? Not sure about the real differencem, but seems in tip of abdomen, very acute and pointed to ground in Ulidiidae fly.

I suppose this is a female fly... correct?

Thank you!

Jizz Basal constriction af abdomen gives an ant-like appearance. Sepsidae. It is (perhaps) not Sepsis though.My guess Nemopoda nitidula

I agree with Robert that it is Sepsidae, but disagree that Nemopoda.
Fused bm br cells look like in case of Australosepsis niviepennis.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
