It is difficult to get decent pictures at high magnification.
As far as I can tell, it should be luctuosa.

Thanks, Theo, luctuosa was also my decision when looking through a microscope, but I have no comparative material and this one was collected in water. Maybe Chris could post some photos of these two species on his new websiteWink

They're very tricky because of the very high magnifications needed to show the detail on the genitalia ... and you need a specimen where the genitalia are in *just* the right position for them to come out well in a photo. I will try but don't hold your breath - I can only go up to about 5x magnification and I am busy cleaning and drying my house after a minor flood ... a pipe burst in the loft Wink

PS: I think that you might be able to make it clearer by relaxing the specimen and folding the genitalia out a bit Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
