I am sure this has to be a melanistic form of something common, but I am utterly lost. Thanks to anybody that can help me to ID it! Taken in the outskirts of Madrid on the 24th April 2011. Piluca_Alvarez attached the following image: [168Kb] |

Looks a lot like the rare species Meligramma cingulata? Do you have a frontal view (face) to fully exclude a dark M. auricollis? And/or any other angles? |

Unfortunately, this is the only shot I have. It was awfully windy and it was a miracle to get this one reasonably in focus But it is very interesting what you said about Meliscaeva auricollis. There were a few specimens of Meliscaeva auricollis exactly in the same spot. I think this solves the mystery Thanks so much for the millionth time, André!! |

PD: The only thing that puzzles me is the hairy abdomen.
