Last week I was in Romania where I managed to capture and photograph several interesting flies including this large Asilid species which I think is a Laphrria sp. and perhaps Laphria ephippium. I would be grateful if somebody could confirm this identification or if not advise me of its real identity. I have retained a specimen and also have other images. The species was caught in the Birsa Valley, Transylvania on 15 June 2011

Very many thanks

Alan

Welcome to the forum Alan - just remember the photo posting guidelines: no spaces or unnecessary punctuation in the file name and keep the size below 190KB Smile Just edit your post and try the upload again.

I tried several times yesterday to get the image to load but without any success and I don't know what I have been doing wrong. The image size is well below the limit and the file name has been reduced to just Laphria. I will try again today and hope that it gets through successfully. It appears that it has still not worked today either!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
