6.5mm, Clitheroe UK, 15 June 2011.

This one attracted my interest by its Coenosia-like behaviour: making short flights to investigate passing traffic and returning to the same vantage-point, the parapet of a railway bridge. Was it looking for females? And what is it?

Sarcophagidae, Miltogramminae.

I would say Senotainia albifrons or S. puncticornis (shape of arista looks different on second versus fourth picture). But ... the shape of the cerci in posterior view (sixth picture) is very different from Senotainia.

I need to examine the specimen for a reliable identification.

Thank you, Liekele. I think my photo of the cerci may have been misleading, so here's another try. Also one of the arista. If you still need the specimen, I'll send it to you.

I am quite sure this is a species of Macronychia, possibly M. agrestis. Fits well with both genitalia and general morphology. /Thomas

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
