Here is a photo from Stéphane Brule in French Guiana. Could anyone confirm whether I have guessed the correct ID?

Yes, they are rather spectacular. I am calling it Cholomyia because it seems to match these from the NHM, London:   and this one I found in another French Guianan sample:
