Good evening,
I?m new to this forum and would like to upload some diptera photos - taken on my beetle tours - to your gallery. There are some families with unidentified specimen and I hope someone is able to help. Today I start with three Stratiomyidae from the central alps.
Thanks in advance
Frank

Welcome. Oooh, pretty pictures of a pretty Stratiomys. I'll leave the species name to someone who actually knows the central European fauna. We have only one Stratiomys species here in Finland and it is quite rare Sad

This looks like Stratiomys chamaeleon female. The other species differ in their abdominal, scutellar and head markings.

... Tony, for the fast identification. It?s nice to see, that it is only one species ;-) Best regards Frank

@ Kahis & Sarah: ty for the warm welcome :-) diversifying? No. I started taking photos of flies (all insects) in the warm "beetleless" summer 2003. But this is the only insect order, where chaos is dominating my photo folders. But some families are pretty good identified: Syrphidae, Asilidae, Tabanidae, Tachinidae = the longhorn beetles of Diptera?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol
