Can anyone ID this red assassin bug? Reduviidae. I think it is Rhynocoris iracundus or rubricus but I'm not sure how to tell them apart and it may be something else altogether. 21.7.2010 Zadar province, Croatia near coast, c12mm. nick upton attached the following image: [116.99Kb] Edited by nick upton on 06-02-2011 20:29 Nick Upton - naturalist and photographer |

I found this link http://medlibrary.org/medwiki/Rhynocoris_iracundus which offers a way to separate R. iracundus from R. rubrica - rubricus has a generally black rather than red frontal lobe of the pronotum and narrower red bands on the legs than rubrica. On that basis I think this is R. iracundus, but an expert might say it rally needs a specimen/microscope.
