A beautiful spider, the prettiest I have ever met! 21st January 2010 rainforest Paraty-Brazil on a rock in the river. Size without its very long legs was about 1cm if I remember well.. Thank you! Myriam bonitin attached the following image: [139.75Kb] Edited by bonitin on 03-01-2011 00:37 |

Not a spider, but an harvestman. Possibly Gonyleptidae

crazy? Fantastic. The Gonyleptidae are insane animals, but there are so many other weird looking harvestmen in the tropics. ruud van der weele rvanderweele@gmail.com |

A fantastic creature indeed! It is Goniosoma discolor -Conyleptidae! Janet Rowley (blowave) has found its ID! I've changed the title..Do the males also have 'boxing gloves' like with spiders? Edited by bonitin on 01-01-2011 17:48 |

no, not at all. Harvestmen have a completely different reproduction system. The have a penis, which is extremely long. For studying it, which is often important, you have to "cut" them out of their body.

The family Gonyleptidae is pretty huge. To be frank I do not know genus Goniosoma well. There are more than 20 species, that is described species. Maybe it is risky to say which species it is based on a photo, but, on the other hand, maybe it is not. I will ask it to some Brazilian friends.

Thanks Ruud, that would be great! I found a picture of another harvestman on another date, also on a rock in the river in the same area. It looks the same to me! bonitin attached the following image: [150.63Kb] Edited by bonitin on 01-01-2011 16:21 |

Ruud, here's the link I found this one on, I did find another which was very similar but this one looked correct to me. There could of course be others which are very similar. Myriam, this one is in Gonyleptidae, it was another with the different subfamily I think. http://ecologia.i...to015.html http://cubits.org... |

Dear Miriam, the correct name is Heteromitobates discolor. Marcio Dasilva told me this. He made a revision of the Goniosomatinae. He told furthermore that this species is common in the neighbourhood of Paraty in Brazil. cheers, Ruud ruud van der weele rvanderweele@gmail.com |

So the species is correct, but it has had a genus name change. Thanks Ruud, it's good to have friends in the right places!
