Hello, is despite of the very unfocused picture - I don't have a better one - a family identification possible? The 3-4mm fly is from april from western Portugal from a forest. Thanks, Michael Michael Becker attached the following image: [11.85Kb] Edited by Michael Becker on 29-11-2010 09:19 |

Hi Michael Lonchoptera sp is about the best you will get from this photo. It has a L. lutea "look and feel" to it, and there is a good chance statistically it is, but that is no way to identify insect. I think this may be a male? but cant quiet be sure. I can eliminate some species from this photo (meijerei, nitidifrons, scutellata, tristis etc) But L. bifurcata is also a possible? Did you net this one (or other Lonchoptera) from Portugal? Mark |

Hello Mark, thank you too for the answer. I know that the photo is very poor, and I didn't even expect to get the genus. I didn't collect flies in Portugal. Michael |
