Is it possible to tell what kind of larvae these are? I would be glad even to know the Order. Found under the bark of a fallen branch, in very early Spring (9 March 2006), West Virginia USA. There were hundreds and hundreds present. Stephen attached the following image: [110.95Kb] --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

Well, the order is easy: Diptera. Family, now that is more tricky. With hundreds present: Lonchaeidae?

Thanks, Paul! I neglected to add that these measured 5.0 mm long.
