Hello, I had seen a few larva wriggling in a glass container outside which had filled with water. On the 19th November I checked and found a pupa which I think is Culicidae. I found another which looks very different, posting that separately. Near Lincoln UK. Size around 8mm. Janet

It's in a glass container (the glass front of an old washing machine door) which is 25cm diameter and 7cm deep, filled with rain water and now has a few fallen leaves. The container is near my east facing wall, my general habitat is woodlands and pastures, sandy acidic soil, old estate area.

In this kind of habitat you can find Culicidae but also Ceratopogonidae (usually Dasyhelea) and some Chironomidae (Orthocladiinae). |

Yes, you correct. These three Nematocera's are the most probable representatives in these small temporary rainwater filled habitats. On your photo's I can't recognize any diagnostic feature to be sure. I think I see the wingsheaths and a part of the abdomen, but I can't recognize the head. Although your habitat seems very characteristic for Dasyhelea I can't be sure. |
