Such a nice fly, it would be good to know its name. 17 August 2010. Beside a stream, in the mountains, West Virginia, USA. Stephen attached the following image: [50.42Kb] --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

It's a beautiful shot, I think the angle and lighting is confusing though. It looks like Merodon equestris of which there are several colour forms. Look at this one on Bugguide which is in a similar stance.. http://bugguide.n...iew/196597 Janet Edited by blowave on 10-11-2010 14:44 http://cubits.org... |

Nope, not Merodon. Compare it with a male Pterallastes thoracicus in Bugguide..... Greetings Greetings, Gerard Pennards |

Ack! I should be LEARNING from these IDs that people are kind enough to provide. My memory is good on some things. Sometimes I can look at a fly photo from 20 years ago and remember what park it was taken in. But Pterallastes thoracicus, no, I didn't remember. Thank-you Janet and Gerard! --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |
