This time, I'm here on the request of a friend, Luca Zucchi from Emilia Romagna in Central Italy, who photographed this splendid Diptera in August in the hills at an altitude of about 600 m. He describes it as "very large" and was impressed by the way it hovered, much in the same way as a Syrphidae.

This is indeed Tabanidae. It is a species in the genus Pangonius!

Pangonius indeed,
in the genus Melanopangonius.
Either funebris or haustellatus.
To be honest, I don't understand the difference of these two
