Large numbers of Phaonia

 I recentlty visited a small village ( 10 - 15 houses) in southern England where every house was being "plagued" by Phaonia.

In every garden and house area many hundreds of flies and many on the hedgerows around the area.

Any suggestons as to why such large numbers ?

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
