Could somebody who knows please confirm that this is Asilus crabriformis (male), my determination is from "Insects of Britain and Western Europe", which may not be the recommended literature, and the gallery isn't much help. I put the thread in Diptera Adults because it is such a wonderful fly I thought everyone would want to see it.

To me this robber does not look like Asilus. It is too hairy in my opinion to belong into Asilinae. It is a very nice species nevertheless, maybe somewhere in Laphriinae?

Thanks Gabor,
Yes it was the hairiness that worried me too.

You will notice that Eric Fisher has determined it as Laphria dizonias - so you were correct.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
