I took this nice specimen the 08 of May 2010, wood of Lauzelle, Louvain-la-neuve, Belgium. I cant' give a name on it. Do you have an idea? The size is close to Tipula maxima, if I remember well.

Cheers,

Olivier

If I follow the PDF, the antennas look like Tanyptera atrata male.
But If I look also at the trochanter, they are black... so...? T. nigricornis? I am not sure about all those color variations. T. Atrata seems extremely variable. Any other thoughts?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
