Could anyone help me with the identification of this Tachinid fly? It was photographed on August 19th 2006 at Leerdam, Netherlands.

I thought perhaps it could be Lecanipa bicincta after going through the thumbs, but I am far from sure.

Well Jan, whatever it is, it is not Lecanipa, for the simple reason that this species does not occur in The Netherlands. Do realize that their are 325 Tachinidae in the Netherlands already, 75 % are spiky and grey. So we should tune into details.
Unfortunately, the picture shows neither head nor wings very well.
The wing venaton suggests Voriini.
My guess would be Voria ruralis. Not more than a guess, though.

Theo, thanks for your help. As you have noticed I am not a fly specialist, I have only just started looking at and photographing flies. Next time I will try to get better pictures. Unfortunately, this one gave me only one chance Sad

Hi Jan

Yes, I know. Tachinids should be more cooperative in front of the lense.
Then the grey spiky ones get difficult.
Let's see next time
