Here's a tiny Bombyliidae about 5/6 mm long photographed near Rome, Italy. Can anyone help?

Hi Sarah,

Unfortunately I can't help you, but I just wanted to say that I like the picture very much!

Incredible indeed (and yes, this is a long proboscis).
The wing venation seems to be reduced, should be a good clue for an expert. Geron ? (not the expert, but the Bombyliidae).
Sarah, what lense and flash did you use ?

Thanks to you too Theo. The lens is a Canon 60 mm macro, hand held, natural light.
In my area, we should in theory have...
Geron albidulus
Geron gibbosus
Geron halteralis
Geron intonsus.
Could it be one of those? Sarah

Solid hands !

My ID was Geron? and not Geron,
So first let's wait for a confirmation on the genus.
Anyway, I won't be of any help further

i think Geron is correct (only 2 veins issuing from discal cell and long pointed 1st flagellomere). probably not halteratus as this one is white-haired (at least in southern spain). to go further requires a specimen and probably a male specimen.
