Does anyone here have suggestions concerning the identity of this fly? (photographed this morning in a sunny wetland on sandy ground in the northern Netherlands, sunbathing on the bark of a birch tree)

Looks like Phorocera obscura but let's wait for Theo or Jaakko

Thanks a lot! I was wondering if there would be a possibility of distinguishing Phorocera obscura from P. assimilis in photos of this quality. I even find it difficult to exclude Smidtia conspersa. I attach another photo, which perhaps can help. Maxim attached the following image: [29.65Kb] Maxim |

I agree, there it little to go on, but given the elongated abdomen, hairy eyes, bristles on face, ... it should be Phorocera obscura (obscura since the scutellum is dark). Theo |
