Or is it Scathophagidae? Photographed mating on the underside of an Omphalotus fungus. I see flies that look like this often when I snap fungi and I'm interested to know what they are. This one in Creswick, Victoria, Australia |

Very fine looking flies. For sure there are Heleomyzidae in Australie, but this couple doesn't look like heleomyzid. I am absolutely not familiar with the Australian diptera fauna, so I can't say what they are, but for one or another reason I thought they look a bit like Dryomyzidae, but possibly I am completely wrong :-)

I think I'll have to go with Heleomyzidae as http://www.ento.csiro.au/education/insects/diptera_families/diptera_families.html does not state the presence of Dryomyzidae in Australia. Thanks for the help Andrzej and rvanderweele! |
