This specimen was photographed by Albert Perrin in Giens (France). Who knows the species?

It's a male Sphenometopa, possibly fastuosa. (S. eluta and S. stelviana also occur in France, but I'm not sure how to separate them.)
Apart from the all-white frons and orbits, and the black basal tergites, note the dark spot on the wing (not immediately obvious in the photo).

According to Fauna Europaea these Sphenometopa sp are listed for France:
- Sphenometopa eluta (Pandell? 1895)
- Sphenometopa fastuosa (Meigen 1824)
- Sphenometopa stelviana (Brauer & Bergenstamm 1891)
- Sphenometopa variegata (Stein 1924)

Hmm, I see you are right ... It's mentioned as doubtful on Fauna Europaea. Ren? Richet seems to be an expert on Sarcophagidae in France. You will find his email adress in this PDF.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
