Nick Upton sent me this photo today and I am having some problems identifying the fly. The facial bristles are very distinctive but the fly doesn't look like Pales, so I was wondering if it might be a Campylocheta?

The fly was seen in Wiltshire (southern England) on 26th June 2009 and was apparently about 7-9mm long.

Can't be, the ocellar is proclinate (have a very close look !).

Looks like a Wagneriini, such as Ramonda spathulata.

SO wrong tree, right forest.

Wow, that's a very close look ... they're minute Shock Ramonda would be a good match and they are fairly common here - would have been nice to see the wings but the photographer didn't have any other shots. Thx Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
